Commercial Truck DOT Inspection Checklist

semi inspectionAll commercial trucks that weigh more than 10,000 pounds are required to have an annual truck inspection regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. This inspection ensures that all the truck’s parts and accessories are in good condition, working properly and safe to use. Bay State Truck Service in Springfield, Massachusetts, has qualified inspectors who perform DOT inspections as well as the enhanced Massachusetts State Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspection.

Federal DOT Inspections

DOT inspections have six primary levels and may be conducted by any qualified DOT inspector or a state police officer.

Level I: North American Standard Inspection

Driver Documents Inspection

  • License
  • Daily log and hours of service
  • Hazmat requirements
  • Medical card
  • Alcohol and/or drugs
  • Driver and vehicle inspection reports

Vehicle Inspection

  • Brake system
  • Fuel system
  • Exhaust system
  • Steering mechanism
  • Coupling devices
  • Wheels, rims and tires
  • Suspension
  • Truck frame
  • All lighting devices and reflectors
  • Windshield and wipers

Level II: Walk-Around Driver/Vehicle Inspection

Almost identical to the Level I vehicle inspection, minus checking any parts that require the inspector to physically get underneath the truck. A Level II truck inspection includes items the driver must inspect daily before and after driving to fulfill Driver-Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) compliance.

Level III: Driver-Only Inspection

A more in-depth Level I driver inspection that includes the driver’s:

  • License
  • Medical card
  • Daily log
  • DVIRs
  • Incident history
  • Hazmat requirements

Level IV: Special Inspection

One-time inspections to take a close look at a specific item or feature of the commercial vehicle, typically performed to invalidate a previous claim about the vehicle.

Level V: Vehicle-Only Inspection

Identical to a Level I inspection, except the driver cannot be present.

Level VI: Enhanced Inspection for Radioactive Shipments

These inspections are only performed on select shipments of radioactive materials and include:

  • Shipment inspection
  • Inspection procedures
  • Radiological requirements
  • Enhancements to Level I inspections
  • Enhanced out of service criteria

Massachusetts Commercial Vehicle Inspections

An enhanced Massachusetts State Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspection is required by the State and equivalent to the annual Federal DOT inspection. With the enhanced State inspection, you’re not required to also obtain a DOT inspection.
