DOT Inspection Levels
Bay State Truck Service is proud to provide Western Massachusetts businesses with all six DOT inspection levels. It’s important to note that all Massachusetts commercial vehicles also require a Massachusetts State Vehicle Inspection, which may replace the DOT inspection if desired. Learn more about available DOT inspection levels with our breakdown below.
Level I: North American Standard Inspection: Includes an examination of the truck driver’s documentation. We review the driver’s:
- Daily travel log and hours of service
- Medical certificate/card
- Alcohol and drugs
- Previous driver and vehicle inspection reports
- Hazmat requirements
The Level I DOT inspection also requires a thorough examination of the vehicle. This includes:
- Fuel system
- Exhaust system
- Steering mechanism
- Coupling devices
- Truck frame
- Wheels, rims and tires
- Lighting devices and reflectors
- Windshield and wipers
- And more…
Level II: Walk-Around Driver/Vehicle Inspection: Includes many of the components of the Level I inspection without the inspector physically examining the commercial truck from underneath. All items that require daily checks for Driver-Vehicle Inspection Report compliance are reviewed.
Level III: Driver-Only Inspection: A complete examination of the driver’s credentials as discussed in Level I. This level does not require the inspection of the vehicle.
Level IV: Special Inspection: This level is performed when a claim is made about a specific item or feature on the vehicle. Our qualified inspectors will examine the feature to verify or refute the claim.
Level V: Vehicle-Only Inspection: Drivers may not be present for this inspection, which examines all the same documentation and components as the Level I inspection.
Level VI: Enhanced Inspection for Radioactive Shipments: Level VI inspections are reserved for vehicles that feature a nuclear symbol decal and select shipments of radioactive materials. This level includes enhancements to the Level I inspection and utilizes enhanced out of service criteria. Vehicles will also be subject to shipment inspections and additional radiological requirements.
